SS Cornelius and Cyprian Catholic Church (Bunker Hill) at 1320 Catholic Church Road, Leslie, MI 49251-9529 US - OUR CHURCH HISTORY

OUR CHURCH HISTORY

Back in the early 1860's Irish farming families began burying their loved ones in a parcel of land that is now the parish cemetery.
In 1863 the first church, a white frame building , was built.  It stood where the cemetery's white crucifix now stands.  Ever since those early days Ss. Cornelius & Cyprian Roman Catholic Church has provided a steady, hard working and loyal Catholic presence in Bunkerhill Township.
Over the years the parish has also produced many vocations to both the priesthood and consecrated religious life.  And one of her beloved pasters, Fr. Gerald Champan, nicknamed it "The Friendly Country Parish."  Indeed we have much to be proud of.
We now have over 190 registered households, and we are growing.  The parish reputation as being a warm and friendly one is a big part of that growth.  People want to be here; and we want them here!
Our parish people have another reputation as Catholics:  They faithfully worship here.  They celebrate the sacraments here, and have their children educated in the Faith, they assist people in need.  They generously support our ministry.  They freely offer themselves for all sorts  of things:  from serving funeral lunches, to caring for the parish buildings, to assisting the poor, to advocating the sancitity of Life, to fasting for the hungry.
Many people in the Jackson and Lansing areas have their roots either with the neighboring farms, or in outlying parish areas.  Currently, our parishioners come from Mason, Dansville, Leslie, Pleasant Lake, Stockbridge, Gregory and Muinith.
As we remain on our mutual journey of faith, as we prepare for the future, let us ask God to continue to help and bless us in making His presence known in and around our serene Bunderhill Township community.  Let us continue to be "The Friendly Country Parish"!

In Christ's Peace and Love,

Fr. Mike Petroski
